The End of Driving: Mike and Maaike introduce the Autonomobile – Core77.

Here’s an interesting car concept from Mike and Maiike (San Francisco), and an excerpt from the article…

Today’s car industry is brainwashed by its own car culture, with its obsession for speed, styling and fantasy. The car business has become one of repackaging, steering people’s focus towards style and a narrow definition of performance, not on our true needs…

It is pretty safe to say that every designer has a terrible urge to draw on any piece of paper they come across, and the most mindless thing to draw is the side view of a car. Resisting the typical car sketching formula(draw two large wheels and something cool in between), we felt a new approach to car design was needed.

I appreciate the effort to rethink the car and love the idea of “moving space” or car as architecture.  I also appreciate the rough doodles as part of their thinking process. Tons more to see here. Check it out. What do you think? If you visit Core77, leave a comment. There’s a pretty good discussion going on in the comment thread there.

delusional! I don’t understand why its been appreciated. It has so much flaws, impractical and absolutely absurd in functionality and experience. Looks just like a trailer with some virus prone gadget.

I feel that people forget the difference between a commuter and a car enthusiast. It is important to transport persons in a comfortable environment, but it is a false accusation to say that the fact that car companies focus on style and speed as a bad thing. Affordable cars should be for those who just want to get somewhere, but the real cars are for those who enjoy being the driver in the journey.
