Updates Coming Soon: More videos, Competition

There are a few videos in the pipeline including this number on pencil sketching, shading, and linework.

Sorry guys, no marker this time. We’ve also got another pencil/marker sketch, and a two part digital sketch demo by yours truly coming up. Not exactly sure what John’s up to, but I’m sure he has something good coming up as well.

We’ll also be hosting our second competition soon with even better prizes than the last time. So, if you’re looking for something to work on this summer, this is the place to be. It’ll be worth your while if you’ve been twiddling those thumbs for the last bit of time. Should make for an interesting project as well for the ol folio.

You guys sure like cars! Is there something special about cars in industrial design? I notice loads of people like to draw cars to show their design skills, even though there’s not many auto design jobs out there.

Well. . . they are fun to draw. :-) But I don’t think i would ever do car design. I worked at a car company for a little bit on an internship and discovered it wasn’t for me. Glad I went product design route now.

why wasn’t auto design for you? just curious

    • http://www.idsketching.com Spencer Nugent

Mmmm. The simplest answer would be . . . it just didn’t click for me – I didn’t have passion or the desire to make a lifelong commitment to it.

I found it terribly frustrating (politics etc) and I didn’t have a real “passion” for cars per se. More of a passion for sketching in general. Besides that, I found the long product development process of 2-5 years unappealing, and the corporate environment just wasn’t for me. So I find myself now happy with product design at a consulting firm – personally I find this more exciting and engaging. Always something new to work on every few weeks and it’s a good chance to cut my teeth with some top notch designers.

I’m glad I had my internship with GM though. It was a great experience and I learned alot. I wouldn’t trade that internship experience for anything.

So without going into much more detail, that’s why.

Hot sketch! I love just a simple, yet dynamic one medium sketch, be it ball point or pencil… we sometimes get carried away and forget how powerful a sketch like this can be. Good stuff.

Thanks man! Thought I’d give it a shot with just the pencil and it turned out okay.
