Mr. Imagination…

These videos are a bit idealistic…and sales driven. But there are some great points and reminders on how to design products with sustainability in mind.( It’s nice exciting to see more companies focus on this.) However, im ultimately posting them for the sketches. “Mr. Imagination” does a pretty good job about communicating complex ideas with simple visual elements. (portfolio fodder!) Xstylus Review

Last week we received a new stylus from a Elton @ GreenBulb. He is an independent designer who asked us to do a review and get the word out about his new stylus. Obviously we gladly accepted.

I have spent some time with the Xstylus and I have to say it’s very well made. I’ve always struggled with all the cheap stylus’ out there and this is definitely not one of them. The pen is made using the standard stylus tip (the squishy rubber ball…eh.) and a combo plastic/metal body (yea!). The body of the stylus has a very solid weight and feel, and when you combine the weight with the expandability of the stylus you get a very comfortable experience. It feels like you’re holding a normal pen and the flexing plastic provides a nice finger rest. This really helps out when you’re using it for long periods of time. The Xstylus also comes with a magnetic Ipad dock that is suprisingly secure and useful.

My only complaint is the squishy tip; it doesn’t provide an accurate sketching experience. I mentioned this to Elton and he did mention he already made the change to a firmer tip. Overall, it’s enjoyable to use and if you like sketching on your tablet then I would highly recommend looking into the XStylus.

Design Process – Donn Koh

I just finished doing interviews for a design position and I can’t tell you how nice it is to see a high quality portfolio that is actually thought through. I saw a small sample of Mr. Koh’s portfolio quite a while ago on Engadget and finally got around to checking him out. He has some great examples of the design process in action and each visual element has a reason for being there.

So, if your a student working on your own and need an example or your just curious go check him out.

Wacom’s Tablet-less Pen

Ready for a new Wacom product? I am. They just release a new “real” pen that will record and transfer your wonderful sketches to the computer…kinda like a livescribe for artist. Sounds fun. I just hope the pen part last long enough so i’m not shelling out a fortune for replacement cartridges that only last a day. Blah!

Check it out – Here’s an interesting concept and project from Matt Marrocco and Adam Hubers. I’m a big fan of any sketching book that does a good job teaching the basics and I DRAW CARS seems to be no exception. Si Scott Drawings…oh the vinyl possibilities!

You guy and gals really need to check out these amazing illustrations by Si Scott Studios. Ive seen them before but just came across them again. I really would like to get a vector file of the gold fish and cut it out of vinyl so it will cover 1/3rd of my bedroom wall. That would me SWEET!

New Capacitive Stylus from Wacom

Just saw this little post on Engadget.com. Apparently, Wacom has just released a BAMBOO stylus made for capacitive screen devices. Don’t get your hopes up just yet. If you were hoping to turn your favorite digital sketching platform in a pressure sensitive sketching machine, You’re out of luck. The sylus seems to add no additional capability to existing devices to detect pressure sensitivity to give you sexy lines when sketching. So for now, you’ll have to fake it. I’m holding out for the MORE/REAL Stylus I pitching in for over at kickstarter. If anyone picks one of these up, send us a review and we’ll throw up some insight. Oh, and if you don’t have an iPad, the pen should work on pretty much any capacitive touch screen.

Sketch A Day Picks

It’s been a while since we posted sketches from our sister site, sketch-a-day.com. If you havent’s gone there, d check it out. Sketch-a-day was started as a personal project to keep the skills sharp by sketching every day. If you’ve watched my videos or seen me in person, you’ll know that I’m a BIG fan of sketching every day. Nothing beats consistent practice and exploration. That said, life throws curveballs at you, and try as I may, sometimes I miss a day, or two, or a week. That doesn’t mean I’m not sketching though. usually I have my head buried in a project with a client or have some family business to take care of. In any case, I try. That’s the key.

Recycled Rubber Strap Pen Holder for Sketchbooks

If you love sketching, and you’re like me, then you might just be tempted to buy this AWESOME, yes AWESOME, accessory for that moleskine or other sketchbook you’ve been carrying around. This recycled rubber strap lets you take multiple pens and markers without much added fuss. Not only that, but it looks like it helps keep the moleskine or other book together. Personally, I just stuff a pen or two in my pocket and take them where I go. This, however, is pretty awesome I think. I might just have to pick one up today!
