I love a good competition and this one is certainly no exception – HMS is putting on an awesome design competition starting today. HMS may not seem like a common household name, but their products are certainly out and about. A leader in home storage and container solutions, they have produced many stellar storage solutions for Hefty and Home Logic.

Their 2010 design competition challenges you to come up with and create new, exciting, and well thought out storage solutions for the future apartment or home of the year 2020. So put on your thinking hats and get cracking. There are plenty of opportunities for cool and exciting ideas. This is of course not solely a sketching competition, and as such, it’ll be up to you to present your designs in a way that effectively communicate your design intent and the products innovative story. You can of course use their handly template as a guide, but I’m sure a little creativity on your part would go a long way.

The brief for this competition is to create a thoughtfully designed home/apartment storage solution that will encompass how people store and organize their own personal items in the homes /apartments of 2020. The design ideas should address key consumer insights such as; eco-green, personalization, and ease of use and convenience.

Look around the house or apartment for clutter that frustrates you on a regular basis. Chances are you and everyone else share the same frustration. Purchasing totes, systems, shelving, etc., just doesn’t seem to have a lasting effect. There is always something that misses our personal needs in storage.

Talk with your family and friends and ask what their organizational habits are and what they don’t like about their current clutter/mess. Also, ask what they would like created to help organize their home. Take a look around the home/apartment and observe how you and others store and organize things in all areas of the home/apartment.

Challenge assumptions! List out all ideas and assumptions for storage units, totes, systems and try to create innovative possibilities. See if anything interesting develops.

The purpose of this contest is to challenge you to come up with an organizational solution for the common home/apartment. The solution can be for any area of the home/apartment, rooms for example:

• Bathroom
• Closet
• Basement
• Kitchen

The solution can also be can be for any particular category of a room, for example:

• Kitchen Utensils
• Clothes in a Closet
• Toiletries in a Bathroom

Who knows, you may already have a solution that could help others and don’t know it. Your solution could win you an iPad. So sketch up your idea and get it to us as soon as possible.
