Practice Makes Better

A long time ago, 7 years ago this fall to be exact, I began my transition from Mathematics major in college to Industrial Design major. At the time, I had little drawing skills to speak of, however I was determined to get better. I cringe at showing this, but this a comparison of one of the FIRST automotive sketches I’ve ever done. I found it while perusing through some old sketchbooks, and I found it pretty hilarious!

Now the lower sketch isn’t perfect, but it is markedly better no? In any case, I’m not an automotive designer, but i do enjoy the occasional pointless car sketch.

My point is, practice makes better – you may not have all the skill and talent now, but keep at it and certainly, there will be results. As my wife always says, consistency over time is the key – so true!

Thanks for this post as sometimes I find my own sketches really discouraging to look back upon. You’re a real inspiration. It’s too easy as an ID student or anyone starting out to feel overwhelmed by the sheer talent and skill that your website displays!

I found myself in a similar situation transitioning from being a Bioengineering major to an ID major years ago, and doodling many pointless automotive sketches in my lab notes :D

yeah man! it seems easy to look the before and after but when comes to us usually the story is lil bit different.Im not trying to say that it is easy to come up with a result like this but, I sketch everyday, one to three hours and im kinda stuck evolving. Since I don’t take any drawing classes,(not a excuse too :P ) looks like we get lost in the exercise of sketching. rouding and rounding and nothing good come up. Some time i think… can i get this good or u have to born “special” asuidhasd lol

    regards

Impressive. I shifted from Nuclear Engineering to ID @ age 29… it’s nice to see I’m not the only one, and It’s nice to know not everyone starts out like the kid that sits across from me every Wednesday. (i.e. Born-to-Sketch).

It seems you’ve come along way. Thanks for being brave enough to show your first sketch! It looks like you made the right decision to shift from Math to ID!

My instructors at CCS would always say: “just keep on practicing…practice practice practice!” However, just flat out practicing does not do the trick. I mean, it does improve eye- hand pencil coordination and line quality. It is equally or more important to STUDY and learn the proportions of that which you’re trying to draw. Knowing the PROPORTIONS of your subject or objects will make a HUGE difference on your drawing skill set.

omg, this is probably the most inspirational post I’ve read.

seeing the heights you’ve achieved has made me more confident I can get better.

    THANK YOU!
