Sketch-A-Day 28: Too much TV

Photoshop

I think I watched too much of this cartoon called M.A.S.K. and other cartoons like Silverhawks when I was younger. Now I know where it comes from. I can’t stop drawing them!

Terrific! Nice graphic feel with your technique of mostly using shades and blocks of colors to define form and indication of detail. This has the feel of what John is doing. It’s great!

Spencer, do you use a Cintiq or traditional Wacom tablet? I think you said the past you are not using a Cintiq. I’ve been using a Cintiq for about a year now and I don’t think I can go back!

  5. I’m too poor for a Cintiq, so I use an old Intuos 3

Yesssss! I was HUGE Mask, Transformer and GIJoe fan back in the day. Way to bring it back! Nice Work!!

Yeah I remember M.A.S.K. when I was young too! Do you remember Visionaries? Or how about the boy who could transform into a red car? Robotech, Voltron, Thunder Cats, etc. They all inspired me to draw :o )
Thanks for posting your work. Enjoy your Holiday, Spencer!

    • How about Jason and the Wheeled warriors? How’s that for obscure. I haven’t heard of too many people who watched that one. I was a huge robotech fan too, even though I had not a clue what was going on most of the time. Definitely gundam etc. and VOLTRON! Yeah!

*raises hand* I used to watch Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors! Boy that’s some huge flashback. All those cartoons mentioned above were on my favourite list, along with Defenders of the Earth (Flash Gordon + Mandrake + The Ghost Who Walks), some awesome cartoons back in those days. And very inspiring as well!

    Hi Spencer,
I love this kind of drawing feel, like cut blocks! Could you make a tutorial demo to know how can we do that please? I suppose that’s not really complicated, but sometimes, just a little tips can help very much!
Thanks in advance, and keep going, your web site is awsome! See ya!

  12. Glad you like it. Funny – I don’t know where I would start with a tutorial of this kind. It’s more something you have to feel out, than a particular procedure.

Great site, i just discovered it and have added your rss. I look forward to your future post. I am a designer and find your site very useful and inspirational, especially the different styles. btw.. WOW.. at first I was like… I remember Silverhawks, and such, even the one about the kid who turns into a red sports car. But M.A.S.K.?? I had no idea until I watched that video and it all came flooding back. I remember quite a bit, especially the robot that turned into the unicycle moped kind of thing and the car that flew by opening its doors. Anyways, your site has inspired me to dust off and polish up my sketching skills.

Ah… Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors… Kick ass.

  15. Yes. Love 80′s cartoons. They should bring em back on Cartoon Network.
